ecowitt Gateway 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Connection Guide and TroubleshootingUpdated 9 days ago
Additional note: Why IoT devices typically use 2.4 GHz
2.4 GHz band: Lower data rate, but better signal strength, stronger wall penetration, wider coverage, and lower power consumption. Ideal for devices that need long standby time or battery power.
5 GHz band: Higher data rate, suitable for HD video and large file transfers, but poorer signal strength, weaker wall penetration, shorter range, and higher power consumption. Not suitable for low-power IoT devices.
Therefore, IoT devices generally use the 2.4 GHz band to achieve better signal coverage, lower power consumption, and more stable connectivity — rather than pursuing maximum speed. This gateway is designed to support only 2.4 GHz based on this principle.
Root cause
Your gateway only supports the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band and cannot connect to 5 GHz or combined smart connect networks. Modern routers (especially Wi-Fi 6 / Wi-Fi 7) often merge 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into a single SSID or enable features like Smart Connect / Band Steering, which prevents the gateway from connecting.
Solutions (depending on router type)
For Wi-Fi 7 routers:
These routers often have an IoT Network or a similar dedicated 2.4 GHz band. Access your router's management interface and enable this IoT 2.4 GHz band. Connect your phone to this 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi, then run the app setup again. The gateway must connect to this 2.4 GHz network, not the main 5 GHz or combined network.
For Wi-Fi 6 (or older) routers:
If your router uses a combined SSID for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, temporarily disable Smart Connect or Band Steering. This will create two separate Wi-Fi networks (e.g., YourWiFi-2.4G and YourWiFi-5G). Connect your gateway to the 2.4 GHz network.
Important notes
The numbers on your router's Ethernet ports (2.5G / 10G / 1G) refer to wired network speeds (2.5 / 10 / 1 Gbps) and have nothing to do with the 2.4 GHz wireless band. You can plug the gateway into any Ethernet port — it will not affect the Wi-Fi connection issue.
After adjusting the router settings, please retry the setup process in the app.
Once the gateway is successfully connected to your router via 2.4 GHz, your phone can connect to either 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi — as long as they are on the same local network (same router), it will not affect communication between your phone and the gateway. You can continue using 5 GHz Wi-Fi on your phone without needing to switch.
If you need help locating these settings in your specific router's interface, please provide the router's make and model for further assistance.
Summary of steps:
Identify your router type (Wi-Fi 7 / Wi-Fi 6 or older).
Log into your router's admin interface (usually via a web browser).
Find IoT Network (Wi-Fi 7) or disable Smart Connect / Band Steering (Wi-Fi 6).
Ensure there is a 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi network available.
Connect your phone to that 2.4 GHz network (for setup process only).
Open the app and reconfigure the gateway.
Once the gateway is connected, your phone can switch back to 5 GHz Wi-Fi — the gateway will continue to work normally.
